History of Rivenhall
Rivenhall from the sky

Rivenhall Airfield Research Project.

We are now preparing for our press release requesting for any stories, photos or memories from the dates 1944-1960's concerning the use of Rivenhall Airfield.  We have had interesting chats with locals concerning the presence of the USAAF and we have been able to gain an insight into the Polish community who contributed so much to the surrounding communities.   Now we must get it online.

Rivenhall Hanger

We are at present gathering material on Rivenhall Airfield.

We are looking for any information from local people who serviced or visited the airfield from its days as a USAAF base to the beginning of the Marconi lease.  With a pile of photos and interviews the bugleonline will publish articles building up an informative social history of the base.

Just by trawling through the internet, storiest appear some sad and some inspirational.  We have spoken to a number of people willing to impart their memories of the base, including locals who visited and clearly remember the American servicemen who had a never ending supply of chewing gum.  Some stories bring a smile to your face, where as children they would creep up to the base and watch all the activity, and some as they grew older discuss how they visited and mingled with the hard working Polish community.

If you have any memories or know someone who has we would love to hear from you.  Just email us and we will contact you immediatedly.  We would especially like to hear from any Americans who served at Rivenhall and would like to share their experiences of the base with us.

 Rivenhall Airfield

Rivenhall Airfield

Rivenhall Airfield is situated two miles north of Rivenhall and close to the small village of Silver End.  The drome’s construction was start early in 1943 and hurriedly put into use, the war was at a critical stage and airfields were required immediately.

In January 1944 the American personnel of the Ninth fighter group the 363rd arrived at the airfield which had no accommodation, technical units, few planes and an even more concerning few trained pilots.  With the 363rd being allocated the P-51’s (which were in short supply) planes were hard to come by, but pilots were brought in from the Eighth’s 356th Group based at Martlesham thereby solving at least one shortage.
